See chapter 3 of the thesis for full details. The characteristics of ulvan from different Ulva species collected from the Bay of Plenty, Aotearoa New Zealand were compared. The chemical characteristics of ulvan from blade (U. australis, U. rigida, U. sp. B, and Ulva sp.) and filamentous (U. flexuosa, U. compressa, U. prolifera, and U. ralfsii) Ulva species were assessed through elemental, sulfate and ash quantification, size exclusion chromatography with multi-angle light scattering detector, constituent sugar analysis with high performance anion exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Rheology characteristics of ulvans were assessed through dynamic rheological measurements using a single-head hybrid rheometer.
