Protothecosis is caused by members of the genus Prototheca. Generally considered to be an acholorophyllic algae, these organisms are the only algae known to cause invasive mammalian infection. The organism isolated in this announcement originated from a non-healing, ulcerated skin lesion located on the nasolabial fold of an adult male following tissue biopsy. Microscopy revealed a dense inflammatory reaction with numerous radially arranged endospores in a pattern suggestive of Prototheca spp.. Genus-level identification was obtained biochemically using VITEK 2 system and DNA was extracted and sequenced using both Oxford Nanopore and Illumina sequencing technology.
