Census of Manufactures, 1977: Industry Series

<p>The Census of Manufacturers is part of the Economic Census series. Its universe consists of all establishments engaged in manufacturing and comprises approximately 350,000 establishments. Four files provide summaries at the four- and five-digit industry level. File 1 data provide information for the nation and States. It gives total number of establishments with 20 employees or more; total number of employees; payroll; value added by manufacture; cost of materials; value of shipments; new capital expenditures. Files 2-4 contain U.S. totals. File 2 provides detailed statistics for many of the general categories in File 1. File 3 contains industry summaries by employment size categories as well as for small single-unit companies with up to 20 employees derived from administrative records. This file also contains end-of-year inventories. File 4 contains selected statistics for establishments according to their degree of specialization in products primary to their industry.</p>
