The Emotional Labor of Midwives Dataset

This study examines the perceptions of the profession of midwifery in professional trade journals in the year 2010, with a particular focus on midwives' performance of emotional labor. Emotional labor is the regulation of outward display of emotion in order to create a particular environment for others based on societal norms. Most occupations that perform emotional labor are devalued by society. The examination is done through a content analysis of 100 professional health and medical trade journal articles, focusing on the discourses of emotional labor, respect, obstacles for midwives, and the comparisons of midwives and doctors.
