The major objective of the project is to understand obligate halophilism of the extreme haloarchaeon 3A1-DGR. This will lead to generation of information pertaining to salinity tolerance and alternate route of carbon gain in extreme salty settings where readily available carbon source is not available for microorganisms for survival and multiplication. Once the mechanisms are deciphered, the same mechanisms can be traced in eukaryotic background which will be useful in imparting osmotolerance in agricultural background.
