资源简介:

Silicified wood forms when plants absorb silica-rich groundwater that fills their cells with silica glass or quartz. This mineralization preserves the plant, turning it to stone soon after death or even while alive. One side has been sliced with a rock saw, and distinctive tree rings can be seen on this surface, along with small circular or tubular structures. The tubular structures have been filled up with silica. Small, white circular and tubular shapes are visible in the fossil wood and were made by wood-eating animals, like beetles, mites, or termites. They were likely formed while the tree was still alive.

This object is part of the historical ‘Ettingshausen collection’, which is on permanent loan from the Institute of Biology, University of Graz.
