Project Description The study will look at driver, environmental, roadway, and vehicle factors that contribute to crash risk at rural intersections. It will accomplish this by looking at safety critical (i.e. crash and near crash) events compared to baselines to evaluate the relationship between these events and driver/intersection characteristics. It will also look at intersection recognition and stopping behavior and how that is influenced by intersection geometry and countermeasure presence and driver behavior. Intersection recognition will be measured through driver reaction through either changes in deceleration, braking, gas pedal position or speed. Stopping will be modeled based on the driver’s minimum speed at the intersection. Data Request Scope Three existing datasets will be used for this research effort: BAA Research Utilizing the SHRP 2 Safety Data to Support Highway Safety Phase 1: doi:10.15787/VTT1/ECXIU1 CTRE Rural Intersection Safety Project: doi:10.15787/VTTIMW2P Roadway Departure IAP Phase 2: doi: 10.15787/VTT1/TE3UOG Also included, 64 crash and near-crash events identified by the following parameters: Event Severity 1: Crash, Near Crash Relation to Junction: Intersection, Intersection-Related Traffic Control: No traffic control, Stop Sign, Yield Sign Locality: Open Country, Open Residential, Interstate/Bypass/Divided Highway with no traffic signals, Bypass/Divided Highway with traffic signals For each crash or near-crash identified by the query, approximately 10 corresponding baseline traces through the same or similar intersection is provided.
