This register contains a summary record of all Residential Leases in the Land District of Tumut, kept by the Tumut Lands Office.This tenure was introduced in 1889 under the Crown Lands Consolidation Act. Under this tenure original and additional residential leases of land within a goldfield or mineral field could be acquired up to a total area of twenty acres by the holder of a miner's right for the purpose of residence. The maximum term of a lease is 28 years and the annual rent is determined by the Local Land Board. The lease may be transferred without the consent of the Minister for Lands. Provision for these leases was repealed in 1964.The leasee was subject to the following conditions, that they hold a miner’s right during the whole currency of the lease, must make the leasehold his usual and only home and residence must commence within three months from the date of notification of the lease. Within twelve months the leasee must erect such buildings and fences as required for the actual residence upon the beneficial use of the land, if not already existing.The register records information such as the name and address of the applicant, or transferee, date and time of receipt of application and date of transfer, date of registration of transfer by Land Agent, date of Lands letter intimating that Transfer has been registered at Head Office, description, area and particulars of Miner's Right or Mineral Licence referred to in application, deposit, survey fee, date of Gazette, annual rent, dates of payment of rent, the period paid for, interest and any miscellaneous action or further remarks.
