Representative oral microbiome data for the United States population: the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Oral rinse samples were collected from NHANES participants aged 14-69 years in the 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 cycles to study the prevalence of oral HPV in the United States population. The DNA extracted from these samples was approved to subsequently be used for microbiome sequencing with support from the US Food and Drug Administration Center for Tobacco Products. The V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene was PCR amplified and sequenced using methods described in detail previously. Each batch of NHANES oral samples included artificial communities, chemostat communities, and/or blank specimens for quality control. The NHANES oral microbiome data will be available from their website (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nhanes/index.htm) and at the Research Data Center (https://www.cdc.gov/rdc/index.htm).
