Bradley Family Photograph Collection

<p>The Bradley Family Photograph Collection contains three cased tintypes showing Charles E. and James E. Bradley. The first tintype shows a man wearing a the uniform of a Zouave unit in the Union Army, identified as James Bradley. A second tintype shows a young man wearing a forage cap and a loose jacket, posed in front of an American flag. This image is also identified as James Bradley, although it does not appear to be the same man. This tintype may instead show Charles Bradley, James' younger brother. A third tintype shows a man wearing civilian clothing. This tintype is identified as Charles Bradley, but the man strongly resembles the image identified as James. </p>

<p>Charles and James E. Bradley were brothers born to Irish immigrants Patrick (1805-1896) and Catherine (McCullough) Bradley (1806-1871). James E. Bradley defected from the Confederate Army and joined the Union Army using his mother?s maiden name, McCullough. He fought along the Rappahannock River in Virginia with the New York State Volunteers until he procured a transfer to the Northwest Department in March 1864. James eventually settled in North Dakota. His younger brother, Charles E. Bradley, attended Academy of the Christian Brothers in St. Louis during the Civil War, worked in real estate, and married Mary Ella Capell in 1875. Charles visited James in North Dakota from the summer of 1870 until the spring of 1871.</p>
