General description of the records in the series (loose papers and one volume): These records contain: ·  Summary of engine and train mileage achieved on a monthly and financial year basis. The format includes traffic train miles by passenger, mixed and goods trains and by each month for steam, electric and RM (rail motor). Information is also recorded for mileages for shunting, Departmental service by categories of Light, Ballast, Inspection Specials, Water, Coal and Cas. & Doubling and Misc plus Total Departmental miles and Engine miles. These records cover the period 1 July 1922 to 30 June 1928. · Records of ton-miles per year. The format includes information related to steam (Car, Goods and Total), Rail Motor, Diesel, Diesel-Electric, Electric and Total. Mileage details are recorded on a monthly basis per financial year for the period 1 July 1945 to 30 June 1949. · Gross ton-miles per engine class and engine miles per class for the year ending 30 June 1956. The format covers the class of engine and month. These records cover the period 1 June 1955 to 30 November 1955. · Details of mileage returns - steam, rail motor, electric and ton-miles. The format includes train and engine mileage by passenger (train, assisted, light), mixed (train, assisted, light) and goods (train, assisted, light), and total train miles. Information is also recorded for mileages for shunting, Departmental service by categories of Light, Ballast, Inspection Specials, Water, Coal and Cas. & Doubling and Misc plus Total Departmental miles and Engine miles. These records cover the period 1 July 1928 to 30 June 1955. This record also contains a list of total train miles and total engine mile for the period 1899 to 1922 and ton-miles for the period 1912 to 1953. Custody History From 1955 until 2000 the State Rail Authority of New South Wales maintained an 'in house archives' consisting of the archival records of the Authority, its predecessor agencies and the private railway companies taken over by the government. The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the 'State Rail Archives' the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered. This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection where it was identified as series R463. It may have been viewed in the State Rail Archives as series R463 and could have been previously cited as such in notes by researchers at State Rail Archives or in publications or unpublished works.
