Determinants of the French Revolution: Freeze, Drought, Transport Access and Social Capital in France, 1788–1789

Replication package for a study estimating whether the winter of 1788–89 shaped the geography of subsistence unrest in France. The deposit contains the derived panels, the Stata replication file, and the Python construction scripts. Accumulated freezing degree days are computed from the daily temperature reconstruction of Pappert et al. (2022) over 1 November 1788 to 28 February 1789, entered in Stefan square-root form and decomposed into the three cold spells the winter contained. Conflict events come from the Historical Social Conflict Database. Analysis is at three levels: 88 departments with 1780 population as exposure, 1,036 georeferenced events with contrée fixed effects, and 502 Great Fear locations.
