The aim of this study was to assess the possibility of manipulating complex microbial communities to reestablish soil biodiversity and functioning. We focused on nitrogen cycling as ecosystem function because of its importance for plant nutrition and recent evidence that it has crossed a critical threshold or boundary that define the safe operating space for humanity.
