The rhizarian amoeba Paulinella harbors an organelle derived from a cyanobacterial endosymbiont, making it the only recent example of primary plastid endosymbiosis. The genes required for a C4 carbon fixation cycle are present in KR01 but their response to stimuli (such as high light or excess CO2) has yet to be described. This project seeks to explore the expression of these C4-releated genes by exposing cultures of KR01 to various stimuli that should result in predictable patterns of up or downregulation.
