These datasets support research on the temporal dynamics of aquatic macroinvertebrate communities and biodiversity–ecosystem functioning relationships in water-filled tree holes (WTHs) in a temperate forest in southern Switzerland. The data combine repeated biological sampling, environmental measurements, and leaf-litter decomposition rates collected over one year. The dataset includes macroinvertebrate community composition, functional feeding groups, physicochemical variables, decomposition metrics, and derived taxonomic and functional temporal beta-diversity indices. It enables investigation of how intra-annual environmental variability shapes community assembly and how temporal changes in biodiversity influence ecosystem functioning in small, dynamic freshwater ecosystems.
