Die Entwicklung der Erziehungsberatungsstellen hat vor 1910 mit einzelnen Institutionen begonnen, die durch die Verbindung mehrerer Fachrichtungen (Medizin, Pädagogik, Psychologie) sowie durch die Verknüpfung von Beratung und therapeutischen Angeboten gekennzeichnet waren. Seit etwa 1920 ist es gebräuchlich geworden, entsprechende Einrichtungen Erziehungsberatungsstellen zu nennen. Eine folgerichtige Entwicklung hat dazu geführt, daß im Kinder- und Jugendhilfegesetz von 1990 Erziehungsberatungsstellen als Institutionen gekennzeichnet sind, die mit multiprofessioneller Besetzung und Methodenvielfalt in der Lage sind, unterschiedlichen Problemlagen gerecht zu werden sowie Beratung und Behandlung bedarfsentsprechend miteinander zu verbinden.
