Humification Index values of the dissolved organic matter extracted from sediment samples collected from the shoreline of Koumoundourou lake

Sediment samples collected from the shoreline of Koumoundourou lake in the western part of Attiki peninsula, 15 km far from Athens the capital of Greece, were treated with a 4 mM CaCl2 solution for the extraction of DOM, at a substrate: solution ratio equal to 1:4. The solutions were shaken for 15 min, centrifuged at 6000 rpm for 20 min at 10 °C and filtered through a 0.4 µm pore polycarbon filter. DOM extracts were characterized by fluorescence spectroscopy. Spectra were obtained by a Perkin-Elmer LS 55 luminescence spectrophotometer equipped with the WinLab 4.00.02 software for data processing.
