Tulip is a monocot perennial herb that is economically very important ornamental plant worldwide. An orange flower tulip sport Tulipa fosteriana 'Shangnong zaoxia' (SZ) has been bred from a pink flower cultivar T. fosteriana 'Albert heijn' (AH). Both SZ and AH contain anthocyanins and flavonols as main pigments in petals, but they showed significant difference in anthocyanin compositions. To generate a broad survey of genes and screen candidate genes related to flavonoid biosynthesis in tulip, illumine sequencing was implemented to assemble petal transcriptome of AH. The results will provide basis for further analysis of the mechanisms of flower color change in SZ and serve as an important public information platform to accelerate studies of the tulip genome.
