Abstract Java island is the most populated volcanic arc in the world, however, the seismic segmentation along slab underground is poorly known due to a lack of sufficient instrumental observation and dynamic three-dimensional (3D) modeling. Focusing on Java subduction zone, we demonstrate the influence of fluid release through slab dehydration in changing the patterns of seismicity along plate coupled interface. The advanced 3D thermal modeling results comparing with the seismic data support this point of view. We also find notable seismic gaps and stress accumulation area, which may shed light on potential rupture zones. This study enhances framework for potential seismic hazard assessment in fluid-rich subduction zones of the earthquake frequently struck areas.
