The example is concerned with the evaluation of thermal comfort as defined in the international standard ISO 7730:2005 – the condition of mind that expresses the degree of satisfaction with the thermal environment, which inevitably differs from person to person and thus entails a probabilistic approach. The main parameter to be evaluated is a thermal comfort index named predicted mean vote (PMV), a formula that depends on measured values and tabulated values given to limited numerical accuracy but in relation to which little has been done to establish measurement uncertainties associated with its use.

Knowledge of these uncertainties is invaluable when values provided by the formula are used in making decisions in various health and civil engineering situations
