Global Assessment of Mercury Inventory in the Active Layer of Coastal Sediments

The code and dataset generated and/or used for predicted Hg contents and inventory of coastal sediments at global scale.This includes the global coastal environmental variable dataset at a 0.25° × 0.25° spatial resolution, which contains the following parameters: grain size, nitrate, phosphate, silicate, water depth, salinity, temperature, primary productivity, total organic carbon, dissolved oxygen, total suspended matter, bottom stress, as well as the computationally derived Urban Impact and Gold Mining Effect. The specific acquisition and processing methods for these variables are detailed in the 'Methods' section of the manuscript and the Supplementary Information. Specifically, the Gold Mining Effect index was calculated using our custom-developed script GME-chaochao.py, which integrates recorded mining information and Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) data sourced from published literature and databases (see Supplementary Information for details). The global screening of coastal cities was performed using our script Screening of coastal cities-chaochao.py, followed by the calculation of the Urban Impact Factor using the script UIF-chaochao.py. Furthermore, the repository also includes our model training code CatBoost-chaochao-model training.py and the SHAP analysis code CatBoost-chaochao-SHAP-new-final.py.
