An application of deep eutectic solvent (DES) for extracting and valorizing high-quality lignin from oil palm fronds

This research presents a new method to convert oil palm frond waste into valuable products. The process uses a special green solvent combined with alcohol to separate the plant material. It successfully produces two streams: a sugar-rich pulp for biofuels and a high-quality, natural-like lignin. This lignin shows excellent potential as a natural UV-blocking additive in sunscreens and biodegradable plastics. A novel two-step approach significantly lowers the cost of recycling the solvent, addressing a major industrial challenge. This work provides a more economically viable blueprint for turning agricultural waste into sustainable, high-value renewable materials.
