One-eighth of the United States (247.3 million acres) is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. As part of the Department of the Interior, the agency oversees the 30 million acre National Landscape Conservation System, a collection of lands that includes 221 wilderness areas, 23 national monuments and 636 other protected areas. Bureau of Land Management Lands contain over 63,000 oil and gas wells and provide forage for over 18,000 grazing permit holders on 155 million acres of land.
