资源简介:
The Government of Canada administers the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation
Program (CSSP) to protect public health by routinely monitoring water quality
in shellfish harvesting areas and toxin levels in shellfish. Some areas may be
closed due to the presence of natural biotoxins produced by tiny marine
organisms. The most significant of these toxins are those that are responsible
for producing paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins. PSP develops from
toxins derived from tiny planktonic organisms called dinoflagellates. Shellfish
are filter feeders that accumulate these toxic dinoflagellates in their systems
through feeding. While the shellfish do not appear to have obvious visible ill
effects, humans who ingest these shellfish may be at risk.
