资源简介:
Replication materials for: "Dividing Stakes: Economic Interdependence, Natural Resources, and Conflict." This study examines how trade helps maintain peace to varying levels across contested issues. I argue that trade is more likely to prevent militarized interstate disputes over issues primarily salient for natural resources. Applying data from the Issue Correlates of War project, I test this argument with both dyadic and extradyadic trade, but strong empirical support emerges only in the case of dyadic trade. A robustness test further reveals that the pacifying effects of dyadic trade are offset when a resource-salient issue is also salient for intangible reasons. These findings demonstrate the need to explore how the association between economic interdependence and peace is conditioned by issue salience. They also call for a reassessment of multilateral trade ties in conflict prevention. Beyond these implications, I provide new insight into changing geopolitical orders in the wake of recent shocks, including the rise of economic nationalism fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic.
