The lightning detection datasets acquired from the State Grid Lightning Network (SGLNET) were analyzed to characterize lightning activity over the built-up area of Beijing; the datasets contained longitude and latitude, GPS time, peak current, polarity, and other metadata. The State Grid Electric Power Research Institute has been developing and maintaining SGLNET since 1977, and it now covers most of the national territory. For SGLNET, the magnetic direction-finding and time-of-arrival technology are used to detect lightning, and the detection efficiency and location errors are about 94% and 489 m, respectively.The hourly data from surface meteorological stations in Beijing were obtained from a network of automatic weather stations (AWS), including wind speed, wind direction, and surface air temperature.The combined reflectivity (CR) of S-band Doppler radar at the observatory in the southern suburbs of Beijing was used to analyze the evolution process of thunderstorms.
