The complete chloroplast genome assembly of Commelina caroliniana Walter (Commelineae, Commelinoideae, Commelinaceae)

Commelina caroliniana Walter is a well-known species of invasive alien plant in the United States, previously misidentified as C. diffusa until 1989 due to morphological similarities. Although there are morphological features that distinguish these two species, the characteristics challenging to observe or may be overlooked, leading to occasional misidentifications. To address this problem and enhance efficient species identification, molecular approaches, such as the development and utilization of DNA barcodes or markers, can be employed. The information from the chloroplast genome plays a crucial role in this research. However, the recently completed chloroplast genomes of Commelina taxa include only two species, posing a limitation for conducting related research. Therefore, this study aims to complete and report the chloroplast genome of C. caroliniana.
