This dataset explores how parenting styles and family structure relate to academic readiness among first-year students at the University of the Free State. Using a qualitative, exploratory design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 10 Humanities students selected through purposive sampling. The dataset includes participants’ accounts of parenting, family environments, and their transition to university, and can be used to examine the role of family context in shaping academic readiness.
