VPRS 15705 Monthly Journals, Crown Lands Bailiffs

This series consists of monthly journals or reports sent by Crown Lands Bailiffs to the Department of Crown Lands and Survey (VA 538) in Melbourne. Details given are the name of the bailiff, the location and, for each day on duty, details of the time of leaving home, the time of returning and the hours spent on duty. Also recorded were particulars of the lands examined and actions taken relative to illegal occupation and damage to such land. Journals may also include additional correspondence from the bailiff relating to matters of salary and leave and requests for guidance on specific provisions of the Land Acts and the actions to be taken.Crown Lands Bailiffs were appointed to monitor at the local level the observance of the law relating to the occupation and use of Crown lands, to provide reports on such matters as improvements and their valuation and generally act as a representative of the Department of Crown Lands and Survey (VA 538).
