ABSTRACT This article presents a rereading of the approach to scientific education from the field of Science Teaching. It has been proposed to adjust that approach (a) to research practices in applied linguistics studies and (b) to the teaching of mother language and training of teachers. This work is configured in a bibliographical study illustrated by some documentary excerpts. It is based on studies of literacy, in addition to dialoguing with other theoretical references from different origins. The rereading reinforced the need for readjustment of functions traditionally performed by some elements of research and teaching practices. The referrals presented can guarantee more democratic and culturally sensitive scientific investigations, as well as a critical pedagogical approach, triggering reflective practices in language classes.
