The Mariana Trench sediments (8,636 m) were incubated with a typical aromatic compound, phenol, under the high pressure of 70MPa. The metatranscriptome was sequenced to reveal the aromatic compound degradation pathway under the simulated hadal environment as well as other metabolic processes.
