Key figures on forest areas in Latin America 2021, by subregion

South America has the highest proportion of forest land based on total land area across Latin America and the Caribbean. In 2021, almost half of the South American territory was occupied by forests. In addition, the vast majority of the land covered with forest in South America – some 97.5 percent – was classified as naturally regenerating forest, while only 2.5 percent was planted. The Caribbean was the subregion with the highest percentage of planted forest, occupying nearly 11 percent of the total forest land.
