Arabidopsis halleri is a facultative metallophyte, metal hyperaccumulator, and among the closest relatives of Arabidopsis thaliana. Understanding the genetic mechanisms A. halleri employs to tolerate, accumulate, or exclude heavy metals could aid in cleaning up contaminated soils (phytoremediation), collecting valuable metals out of the soil (phytomining), and even preventing soil pollutants from entering our food supply. Previous efforts assembled a pool of nearly a thousand A. halleri individuals from 165 populations collected across Europe from metallicolous and non-metallicolous locations (Stein et al., 2016). These individuals have been genotyped with GBS (genotyping-by-sequencing) to facilitate an exploration of the population structure and detect signals of local adaption in this unique species.
