Urban Expansion is Displacing Global Arable Land Toward Tropics and Drylands

The "code" folder contains codes and related data to reproduce Figs. 1-3 & S9-S11 in the manuscript "Urban Expansion is Displacing Global Arable Land Toward Tropics and Drylands". It shows (1) arable land and built-up areas are strongly structured by climate, (2) global dynamics of arable land in relation to built-up area, and (3) global arable land shifted toward tropical and arid climates between 2000 and 2020. The used data include (1) 1-km global arable land fraction (GALF), (2) 1-km Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) built-up fraction, (3) 1-km Köppen-Geiger climate classification, (4) 5-arcminute HYDE3.4 (0-202024) land cover reconstruction data, (5) 0.25° LUH2 (850-2015) land cover reconstruction data, and (6) 30-m Global Land Analysis and Discovery (GLAD) cropland and built-up data. The code is running using MATLAB R2024a.
