Im Mittelpunkt der vorliegenden Untersuchung steht die Frage, wann und wie im Laufe der Entwicklung ein tonales Verständnis erworben wird. Es wurde untersucht, wie Kinder {5-6 und 9-10 Jahre) und Erwachsene ( 19-45 Jahre) Schlußtöne von Kinder- und Volksliedern einerseits beurteilen und andererseits selbst produzieren. Die Ergebnisse brachten sowohl im Urteil als auch in der Produktion eine mit dem Alter zunehmende Festlegung auf die in unserem Kulturkreis gebräuchlichen tonalen Beziehungen zum Ausdruck. So akzeptierten die 5-6jährigen Kinder auch untypische Liedschlüsse (auf der VI. Stufe) und produzierten relativ indifferent sowohl nicht diatonische als auch diatonische Schlußtöne. Die älteren Kinder und Erwachsenen präferierten dagegen eindeutig T onikaschlüsse und produzierten nahezu ausschließlich diatonische Schlußtöne, insbesondere die Tonika. The present study investigated the acquisition of tonal understanding in children and adults. Children (5-6-year-olds and 9-10-year-olds) and adults (1) rated the ending of children's and folk songs for their degree of »completeness « and (2) produced final tones of such melodies. Both judgment and production results indicated an increasing intemalization of the diatonic scale structure of Western music. The youngest children accepted melodies ending on the tonic as much as melodies ending on the atypical sixth scale degree. Analogously, they did not produce more diatonic than nondiatonic endings. The older children and adults, however, preferred melodies ending on the tonic and almost exclusively produced diatonic endings, especially the tonic. notReviewed publishedVersion
