Strain W1 belongs to the genus Haladaptatus within the phylum Halobacteria in the domain Archaea. Halobacteria (colloquially called Haloarchaea) are generally obligate extreme halophiles. But strain W1, along with some other members of the genus Haladaptatus, are moderate halophiles that can even grow at seawater salinity. The aim of this genome-sequencing project was to identify features, e.g. compatible solute biosynthesis pathways, that make this haloarchaeon behave more like a typical bacterial moderate halophile.
