Respiratory microbiota composition is important for the maturation of the immune system in infancy. Despite significant past work, little is known about the difference in nasal microbiota of preterm infants compared to healthy full-term infants. Further, the effect of prenatal antibiotic exposure on respiratory morbidity in infancy remains controversial, and little is known about the interrelation of the infants' postnatal microbiome in this pathway. We tried to close these knowledge gaps with systematic analysis of clinical and microbial data collected in a prospective birth cohort.
