To better understand the nutrient status and changing trends of forest ecosystems, this study observed that the nutrient content in Chinese fir leaves has no correlation with mean annual precipitation, but is closely related to stand density. Specifically, stand density has a significantly negative correlation with leaf phosphorus mass fraction (r = -0.354, P < 0.05), and a highly significantly positive correlation with the ratio of leaf nitrogen mass fraction to phosphorus mass fraction (r = 0.486, P < 0.001). This study further found that precipitation is a key factor driving the differences in soil nitrogen dynamics of Chinese fir plantations, while stand density is the primary indicator affecting the nutrient source and input of these plantations. Changes in mean annual precipitation and stand density affect the availability of soil nutrients in forest stands, and ultimately alter the nutrient mass fraction in Chinese fir leaves. This study suggests that leaf phosphorus mass fraction can serve as an indicator of soil nutrient levels including soil nitrogen and phosphorus, while precipitation can act as a predictive indicator for soil nitrogen dynamics. In regions with mean annual precipitation ≥1500 mm, controlling stand density below 2500 trees·hm⁻² can help improve the nutrient mass fractions of forest soil and tree leaves, which is beneficial for maintaining the productivity and sustainable development of Chinese fir plantations.
