Abnormal Chromosome 10 (Ab10) is a selfish variant of chromosome 10 in maize that exhibits meiotic drive. Factors that enable meiotic drive are encoded in the distal tip of Ab10. One candidate is a multi-copy kinesin homolog. In an Ab10 lineage that loses drive, the multi-copy gene is deactivated, and preliminary evidence incriminates DNA methylation. We refer to the deactivated version of Ab10 as "smd12". In this study, we have carried out whole genome methylC-seq (BS-seq) and small RNA-seq to compare DNA methylation and small RNA profiles of smd12 and its progenitor Ab10.
