Dentin, the most abundant mineralized tissue in the human tooth, plays a crucial role in the overall mechanical performance and function of teeth however, can be damaged by demineralization as part of tooth ‘decay’. Successful repair requires recreating the precise spatial organization of mineral components, scaffold structures, and the soluble matrix. In this study we explore the outcomes of a novel demineralizing dental filling material, now in phase one clinical trials, by studying whether dentin can be repaired in terms of its structural organization. We anticipate that the combination of 2D microdiffraction measurements and XANES micro-spectroscopy analysis at the Ca k-edge will offer valuable insights into the characterization and speciation of the hierarchical nano- and micro-structure of both the demineralized lesion (damaged tissue) and the interface between the novel restorative material and the affected dentin.
