Distance-based sampling of birds

The dataset was collected at 3pm on York University campus in the Danby woodlot and in the grassland to the south of the woodlot. A 25 foot transect tape was placed on the ground and the researcher walked the length of it while visually scanning the area for birds and listening for bird song. When a bird was located, the point of the 25 foot transect the researcher had reached was recorded, as well as bird species, and number of birds of the same species seen within 75 feet of each other. Distance (in feet) between the bird and the transect was estimated and recorded. Wind was rated using the Beaufort wind scale. The transect tape was then placed again in a different location in a parallel direction to the previous, and the procedure was repeated. This was done for a total of ten transects, five in the woodlot and five in the grassland.
