Representing Data Quality Information Usably

Providing decision-makers with information about the quality of data used to make decisions (data quality tags) can impact decision outcomes. However, there has been little consideration given to the semantics, representation, and usability of data quality tags or the potential impact of such issues on experimental soundness. In this report, we introduce the use of contextual inquiry (an Interaction Design Technique) to address these concerns by providing recommendations for the design and use of data quality tags in research and practice. We identify usability issues in prior research, refine the design of planned empirical studies, and suggest the use of Interaction Design Techniques to improve the usability of experiments in other research domains.
