资源简介:
Image Library of Middle Eocene Río Pichileufú Fossil Plant Specimens- Part 1 of 2This collection comprises the Image Library of specimens housed at the US National Museum of Natural History (USNM) in Washington, D.C., USA. of middle Eocene (47.7 Ma) fossil plant specimens from Río Pichileufú, Rio Negro, Argentina. This Image Library is part of a larger dataset that accompanies the following publication:Rossetto-Harris, Gabriella and Wilf, Peter. 2024. Reassessing floral diversity at Río Pichileufú, earliest middle Eocene of Río Negro, Argentina. Palaeontologia Electronica, 27(3):a48. https://doi.org/10.26879/1383
palaeo-electronica.org/content/2024/5337-diversity-at-rio-pichileufu
Note: To fully utilize this resource, users should also refer to Part 2 of 2, which comprises the collections of specimens housed at Museo Paleontológico de Bariloche (BAR) in Bariloche, Argentina: 10.6084/m9.figshare.25136948Publication InformationThe publication linked to these specimen Image Libraries fully describes the history of the discovery, the geological context, previous conceptions of the flora, and the importance of revising the Río Pichileufú flora. It outlines the recent publications on several species from the flora (Table 1) and the numerous outstanding taxonomic issues that stem from early 20th-century works (Table 2). For the first time, we considered recently made collections from the site, alongside the original historical collections, to produce a new schema of fossil leaf morphotypes to reassess diversity (Table 3). Our resulting morphotype descriptions are presented in Appendix 1, we provide a dicot leaf architecture character matrix in Appendix 2, a morphotype identification of each specimen in all the collections in Appendix 3, give abundances of each morphotype in Appendix 4, and in Appendix 5 we assessed each of E.W. Berry's (1938) species. The image libraries presented here comprise all the data used to form these morphotype concepts, and several are used to illustrate the exemplars in Figures 3-13 of the paper. As a result, this publication establishes a framework to help guide future taxonomic studies, insect-damage studies, or other analyses to improve understanding of the ecological, biogeographic, and evolutionary significance of the Río Pichileufú flora.Specimen InformationThis Image Library (Part 1 of 2) includes type and associated cohort specimens. They are part of the original collection made by J.R. Guiñazu from the Río Pichileufú site that E.W. Berry examined in his 1938 study of the Río Pichileufú flora. Please refer to Appendix 3 for a comprehensive list of specimens and their identification. For a detailed explanation of specimen IDs and associated comments, consult Appendix 1.When referencing these specimens in your work, please use the USNM PAL specimen number.File Naming ConventionEach image filename in this library follows a specific format:Species name (as assigned by E.W. Berry in 1938 or by his handwriting in collections; See Appendix 5)Citation of Berry 1938 plate and figure (if applicable*)USNM PAL specimen number* If "Cohort" appears in the filename instead of a plate and figure citation, the specimen was not figured in the 1938 publication.
