The Economics of Family Violence: Quasi-experimental Evidence

Violence against women, particularly intimate partner violence (IPV), remains a pervasive global problem with profound social and economic costs. Although research highlights the role of women’s bargaining power and socio-economic factors in shaping IPV, evidence on effective interventions remains limited. This dissertation advances the literature by exploiting natural and quasi-experimental variation to study how family violence responds to sports, policy, and environmental shocks. The three essays examine the impact of emotional upheaval in Mexico, marijuana legalization in the United States, and wildfire exposure, capturing physical, emotional, and economic dimensions of violence and their implications for policy.
