Sea ice diatoms living in the same habitat as this bacterium have genes for ice-binding proteins. These genes may have been acquired from bacteria. F. frigoris has a gene for an ice-binding protein that is 44% identical (at a.a. sequence level) to a diatom gene, and demonstrates that an opportunity for horizontal gene transfer from bacteria to diatoms exists.
