Seagrass beds are among the four most productive marine natural ecosystems in the world. Zostera japonica (Z. japonica) is the most widely distributed species of seagrass in China. However, neither reference genome nor large-scale full-length cDNA sequences for this seagrass are still lacking, which in turn impedes progress in research studies in seagrass functional genomics and molecular ecology. In this study, we apply a combination of second- and third-generation sequencing technologies to sequence full-length transcriptomes in Z. japonica.
