Water samples from streams, lakes, and two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were consecutively collected between 2020 and 2022 in an established water surveillance system in the canton of Zug, Switzerland. ESBL-producers were recovered after an enrichment step by plating samples on Brilliance ESBL agar (Oxoid) and isolates typed by MALDI-TOF and MLST or a ST131-specific PCR. E. coli ST131 isolates were short- (Illumina) and long- (Nanopore) read sequenced and genetically characterized.
