Data used to validate FuzzyQSM: A novel fuzzy tree reconstruction approach

To test our novel fuzzy tree QSM reconstruction approach 25 tree models of 5 different species were used. These are based on real tree QSMs from the Wytham Woods data-set (https://zenodo.org/records/7307956) and smoothed to be more realistic using Markku Åkerblom's Blender add-on (https://github.com/InverseTampere/qsm-blender-addons).Laser scanning was simulated using Helios++ (https://github.com/3dgeo-heidelberg/helios) for ray-tracing without noise after which noise was added taking range and incidence angle into account.QSMs were fitted to the resulting point clouds using both TreeQSM and FuzzyQSM. The selected trees are given in FuzzyQSM_Tree_Selection.xlsx and assessed scanner specifications in TLS_Scanner_Specifications.xlsx. Original tree QSMs were taken from the Wytham Woods data-set (https://zenodo.org/records/7307956), stored in Original_QSMs. The name of each folder denotes the tree species and ID, within which the original TreeQSM v2.0 file is located (wytham_*.mat), the translation to the more modern TreeQSM v2.4.1 format, (SPECIES_ID_QSM.mat) and the .txt file used for Blender (SPECIES_ID_QSM.txt).Smoothed models were created from these trees in Blender using Markku Åkerblom's add-on (https://github.com/InverseTampere/qsm-blender-addons) and stored in the Smoothed_Models folder. Note that .mat files are also present to more conveniently load their respective data.Ray-tracing was performed for two scanning locations by Helios++ (https://github.com/3dgeo-heidelberg/helios) without noise, the results of which are given in the folder Helios_ScansRange and incidence angle dependent noise was added to arrive at the final point clouds located in the folder Point_Clouds for two beam divergence angles: 0.175 mrad and 0.30 mrad. QSMs fitted by TreeQSM v2.4.1 are located in the TreeQSMs folder for both beam divergences. QSMs fitted by FuzzyQSM are located in the FuzzyQSMs folder for both beam divergences and include the point cloud distributions. Matlab R2024b was used to create and load the .mat files, although other versions of Matlab should also work, and Blender v2.80 to work with the add-on.
