This organism causes chronic lung infection, similar to tuberculosis, in patients with cystic fibrosis. Mycobacterium abscessus also causes wound and ear infections and, in immunosuppressed patients, can cause generalized infection. It is very resistant to many commonly used antibiotics, which makes treatment difficult. This M. abscessus isolate belongs to subspecies bolletii and was isolated in 2005 at Instituto Evandro Chagas, Belém, PA, Brazil, from a patient subjected to laparoscopic cholecystectomy. It is the representative isolate of an epidemic of surgical-site infections caused by a single strain of rapidly-growing mycobacteria and was deposited in the collection of the National Institute for Quality Control of Health (INCQS-FIOCRUZ), Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The epidemic affected more than 1,700 patients in several States in Brazil between 2004 and 2008.
