This dataset presents the results of laboratory and numerical (DEM) investigations of the deformation mechanisms of sand. The data include: (1) mechanical results from sand shearing in a direct shear apparatus, (2) mechanical results from sand shearing in a direct shear apparatus simulated using the discrete element method, (3) displacements of individual grains, (4) rotations of individual grains, (5) void distribution, and (6) interparticle normal forces obtained from the DEM analysis. The mechanical results were obtained for three different initial void ratios (medium-dense, loose, and very loose). The mesoscopic data were recorded for three stages of the test (2.0 mm, 4.0 mm, and 6.0 mm displacements).
